Hints
Heloise Updates: Our mothers and grandmothers have passed down hints and information they learned and have used over the years to run their households. However, products and materials are changing so rapidly that there are now newer and different methods for handling household matters and incredible new products like microfiber cloths. My staff and I research the old versus the new to provide contemporary updates. Click here for the latest Heloise Updates.

Heloise with Cabbie sitting on the cover for the sidecar of "Svetyanla" Heloise's 2005 Russian-made URAL motorcycle. Click Here for a larger photo.

Svetyanla is what I call my bike! She is a 2005 Russian-made URAL gear-up that has reverse, as well as shovel, and spare tire! The top speed is about 60 mph, the engine is 749 cc with 4 forward gears and one reverse, plus an electronic and kick start just in case! How is that for practical?

Heloise dressed in her riding gear...jacket with body armor, helmet, boots and gloves ready to ride in the Texas Hill Country. The Russian motorcyle is a URAL Gear-Up that has reverse and and electronic and kick start. Safe riding! Click Here for a larger photo.

My husband David bought her, and I loved riding her, so now she is 1/2 mine. We joke about which half, the sidecar? (The bike is dual rear wheel drive on demand).

Cabbie our miniature Schnauzer likes to go for rides in the sidecar. I put-put around the yard, in first gear and she seems to enjoy it. We have taken her on short drives around the neighbor hood and she is quite an attraction. I have had a motorcycle license since 1974 and still own my 1974 Kawasaki 175 dirt/street bike. (I even have the original manual!)

Most important, my helmet, jacket (with body armor), boots and gloves are always on. So, if you see this camouflage sidecar bike around Texas or your state, it just might be me! Keep the wheels on the ground.

HELOISE CENTRAL
My office staff compiles great ideas. Because the computer keyboards are always busy, here are some low-tech hints for your high-tech equipment:

  • Use a small, soft clean paintbrush or makeup brush to dust your keyboard.
  • Do not ever spray a cleaner right onto the keyboard.
  • Get crumbs or dust bunnies off your keyboard by turning it upside down and shaking it gently.
  • Buy compressed air at a photo shop or office-supply store to clean the keyboard.

Heloise’s Money-Saving Cleaning Formulas
I have many “recipes” for homemade cleaning formulas and beauty solutions. They are made of common products you can buy cheaply and easy to mix up. Click here for hints on making them.

FAST FACTS
Don’t throw out empty spray bottles; instead wash, label and reuse:

  • Add water and several drops of lemon or orange essential and use to cover up smelly trash odors.
  • Fill with water to mist plants.
  • Mix a solution of half vinegar and half water in the bottle and store with paper towels in your car to clean dirty windows.

Summer’s coming and we’ll be dining outside during the wonderful warm weather. Barbecuing and picnic fare will be in order. Cole slaw is one of my (and my mother’s) favorite summer dishes.

HELOISE’S COLE SLAW
1 head cabbage, about 2 pounds
Ice water to cover
2 ounces vegetable oil
1 ounce vinegar or lemon or lime juice
1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard (not powdered)
1/4 teaspoon celery salt
1 ounce real mayonnaise
Salt and pepper to taste
Dash of paprika

1. Shred cabbage and soak in the water for 30 minutes. (If you are using bagged slaw, skip this step.)
2. Mix together the rest of the ingredients.
3. Drain the cabbage and mix into the dressing.
4. Refrigerate until cool.
Note: This slaw is better if it’s made ahead of time, because the flavors blend together so well.
