Heloise's Quick Clothing Repair HintsDue to your many requests, here are
the hints I demonstrated during my appearance on ABC's "The View",
October 7th. BUTTON FIX - Sew a button on quickly and securely with dental floss or doubled thread. Follow the criss-cross or similar pattern of buttonholes several times, push needle back up through material under button and wrap around (underneath or around the shank) the button 3 times securely. Pull needle back through to inside and knot. Use toothpick, wooden match or the like under button while sewing in on so that it is not sewn on too tightly against the material. FRAYING BUTTON THREADS - Prevent and stop them by dabbing the top of the button with a little clear nail polish, let dry and trim any loose thread. HEM IN A HURRY - When a hem falls and your unable to change the next best thing is a quick fix. Use a piece of masking tape, duct tape, safety pin(s), even an adhesive bandage or two will work in a pinch. If you have a sewing kit with pre-threaded needles handy, use a quick whip stitch with a knot every third or so stitch to keep that hemline up. SWEATER SNAGS - Don't cut or pull that snag, instead take the tip of a closed pen, a blunt letter opener or something similar and "push" the snag back through to the inside of the sweater. Knot the snag on the inside of the sweater and help secure the knot with a small dab of clear nail polish. STICKING ZIPPER - Rub the zipper teeth with the lead point of a pencil, a candle or paraffin to help it glide smoothly and stay on track. TIGHT PANTS! - When those jeans won't button comfortably, grab a thick rubberband. Loop one end around the button and pull the other end through the buttonhole and back to the button to loop over again. Loop two rubberbands together for those days when a little more "room" on that waistband is needed.
